For ferrous fittings, the process would involve immersion in manganese or zinc phosphate (parkerizing). Alloy fittings (brass, Tombak) can be chemically darkened with selenium dioxide.

UPDATE: I just deleted 70 of 1280 photos and one short video uploaded to Photobucket specifically for 3rd Party Hosting. I thought I should mention that Der Spieß is an Unteroffizier rank (proper title: Etatmässige Feldwebel) in the German Army. The equivalency would be a company sergeant major (Commonwealth Army) or first sergeant (U.S. Army).
