Is it hand or machine stitched? This will give you an idea of the period. In 1810 a German did invent a machine for sewing caps, but it didn't work. really functional machines didn't appear until the later 1830s, even then it was another 20 years before they could be said to be in common use.

Being born and raised in NJ, the flea markets there were superb up until the early 90s for militaria. PA had even better ones. Might still yield some great stuff, but flea markets have been the dumping ground for fakes for decades now. So many think they are getting "fresh out of the woodwork" item...

The British did supply uniforms and equipment to Prussia during wars with Napoleon. The diamond shaped plates that I have seen from that period (none were Prussian) were attached by being stitched to the front f the shako. Why would a Government prohibit something that is used to protect an individual and is not an offensive weapon? :-k (not a very secure Government). Although, I believe that the German Army considered the steel helmet as a weapon item and not part of the uniform.

Check back through the postings on this group, there are a couple excellent post about doing what you have asked. I think that your helmets maybe good pieces to learn on. Redoing a helmet is like restoring an old car, you can get one already done cheaper. It is something you do as a hobby.

Before I would use anything on the Wappen, I would give a good cleaning with a mild soap and water and a soft tooth brush. It looks to me as some of the discoloration is from old polish that wasn't cleaned off. Once the piece is cleaned then use the weak acid like vinegar or lemon juice.
