I think the 'f' stands for ''Feldbrauchbar" (spelling?) which as you say, indicates a field repair was made on the helmet. Very nice.

Actually Brian, I wondered about that and I couldn't recall whether that was the case or not? This has like a silver wash on the reverse so I wondered if it had such on the front? I'll post a pic asap to show you what I mean.

Nope, it's for a 'haube I think. It's quite large and very curved. The centre helmet crown and the antlers are pierced out but the Lion's crown is not - does this make it something less than an Officer wappen or not? I think I've seen Officer helmets with pierced and not-pierced. The overall quality...

I feel that it has to be "2RIR3B" as nothing else would make much sense. The first character is definitely a "2", and then "RI". Dunno why they couldn't have made things more clear back then - surely they knew these things would become highly collectable in the future? ;-)

Very interesting helmet this one. It's a terrible shame that a lot of the crossbase types end up with the 'sunken top' effect.
