Re: brodie helmet construction video
Many years after this film was shot, I had an office no far from the location shown. The paint oven was still there, but a scapulas bailer had been installed where the liners were assembled. The stamping dies for the helmets still sat on s rack outside my office. While I was employed there I was di...

Re: brodie helmet construction video
Interesting videos, but these are NOT Brodie helmets. These are American M1917 helmets, which are based on the British MkI. The Brodie helmet and the MkI are not one in the same, even if collectors use the term Brodie for all British/American helmets from WWI. The Brodie was the first helmet and had...

Re: Unknown helmet
I agree it is a MkIII, which differed from the later MkIV as noted by the rivet placement for the chinstrap. It is higher on the MkIII and this pattern has a liner that can't be as easily removed. This was changed with the MkIV, which allowed the liner to be removed and kept the helmet "waterti...

No I haven't. Joe was able to determine a little bit. I believe it would have been a unit from Wisconsin or Illinois, and used in the 1890s to circa 1910. I believe only a couple dozen or so of these were even produced.

Op-Ed: Is It Always Wrong To Buy And Sell Nazi Memorabilia?
Given the state of the world today I wrote this op-ed on the collecting of certain military items, but also questioned the context of how it is suddenly OK to play as the Germans in a video game if they are the "bad guys." This is for the political news website TheFederalist.com: Is It Alw...

Re: Early French Indo-Chinese Salacco
Their hair is grown out and tied up then the salacco (conical hat) is worn over and tied to the head with a scarf - typically red scarf. This could explain why the hats evolved into the sloped version that could be more easily worn.

Well, a live Lewis Gun at $30,000 is just a bit out of my budget and even the ones with a dummy receiver can be $10,000. So I opted to import a couple from a company in the UK that makes movie props. The color is a dark blue/gray, which seems correct for South West Africa. I think it just faded after 100 years, which isn't really surprising. In person you can see the blue/gray but it gets washed out in the photos.

In Yekaterinburg, Russia, Czar Nicholas II and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks on July 16, 1918, bringing an end to the three-century-old Romanov dynasty. Crowned in 1896, Nicholas was neither trained nor inclined to rule, which did not help the autocracy he sought to preserve among a peo...
