Thanks guys for the encouragement . The reason I went with this radical fix is as I stated before the dome was crushed and extremely soft. Almost like a glove or worn out pair of leather shoes . Very nice M15 example Coert! The chin strap issue is always with us. I know that some collectors will buy a beater helmet just to get a complete strap if it has one...I know I would. The rarest strap of course, is the one with silver/nickel fittings for the pioneer and leibgarde helmets. Good luck ...

An original chinstrap ( fair condition ) sold on ebay about a couple of weeks ago for $280 plus. That is the price of a very good set of chin scales .

As far as I know, you won't see the inner side of the leather in any type of spiked helmet, civilian, fire or what have you (at least I've never seen it).
