This one, I don't have a very good feeling about it.

The French auction house insisted that it's totally original which I have my doubts.

What do you guys say?

Re: JR 155 or JR 165

Wow, Philippe That is a nice helmet. If I can get my hands on such helmets, I don't mind that it is a M91 post threaded plate LOL Anyway, this collector whom I got my Waterloo helmets from - think he just put in all the plates without bearing in mind the model. I got off a M1867 Artillery 8 A.F with...

Re: CHINSTRAP

I agree....original fittings on a repro/new leather strap. Original brass buckles have rounded edges as we see here. The Baldwin collection auction was way out of my league. I did see pieces on display at the 2018 SOS but again too rich for my blood. I don't think I even dare to look at the realise...

Re: CHINSTRAP

Hi Philippe, Baldwin was smart to put everything in books before he passed on and he have unbelievable explanations to justify his "red flag" purchases. Publisher was also smart to put a mixture of headdress with uniforms and mess tins etc so that collectors tend to buy all volumes instead of volume...

Re: CHINSTRAP

The picture is from Michael Baldwin book, he claimed it is an original chinstrap which I have doubt over it. Somehow some items in his books are not as what he claimed to be. I bought his 2 volumes at the recent SOS and I feel that he always has good justification for things that look wrong to me (I...

Thank you Woz and Philippe.

It did have a waterloo plate but seller put it as Regiment JR 155. The plate was a model 1871 plate with the threaded posts, I do have a M1895 plate so that should fix it.

Re: Camouflaged M17

Hi Patrick, I cannot say that I am an expert as I am still learning. I have a fair number of camo helmets. The camo paint must have the brush strokes and to be in the correct colours as stipulated in the directive issued by Chief of the General Staff of the Field Army, Erich Ludendorff in July 1918....

I have 3 FAR 44 haubes. All year stamp 1916. I believe that all the 44 in the collecting circles are original. Maybe all recycled as war bond gift as well. Yours look like an unissued one. I have one like that, the other two are rougher.

Alan, thank you for the links. Very nice example that you have. The chinscales and rosettes have lost the brass gilding, and I have spare ones to match the mercury on the eagle plate so that should look okay. Going to finish it later. This one, Rod, my hubby, found it at the recent SOS. He bought it...

Sorry for my ignorance.

Adler, a beautiful helmet that you have.

Seems like the Bavarian army has used a lot of substitute materials for their officer helmets instead of just the leather and felt products.

Thank you.
