Bavarian M87 3rd Infantry OR helmet

Post by J.LeBrasseur » Wed Nov 27, 2019 12:03 pm

This is now one of my favorite helmets, just picked up from a good friend.

Bavarian M87-92 OR helmet with flat scales on M92 side posts.

Has two original markings that are fantastic, and in the back of the helmet in large letters/numbers.

Marked 3 J.R. 1895 and 5C. 1895. 2B

James

Nice condition! M97 with 1895 stamps? Has the helmet been converted? Must admit I don't really like the look of the stamps, but I'm only used to Prussian stamps so Bavaria will most likely be different; the rest of the helmet looks great!

Sorry about that a typing error I fixed, it is a M87 so the 1895 markings are fine, have ahd a few Bavarians with large markings like this.

I almost bought a Chevauxleger one which had the same style markings in it.
Didn't buy it because it had no liner.

Nice helmet James, congratulations :thumb up:

Nice Helmet, congratulations :bravo:
Btw, I saw bavarian Helmets with tall Spikes and some Helmets, like this one, with shorter Spikes. I found no reasons because of Regiments for these differences, like flat or rounded Chinscales. Doesanybody know if there existed a rule?
Best wishes, Sandy

A scarce helmet, James, one of the last bavarian infantry helmets, dated 1895, before the new M96 bavarian pattern was introduced. The single bavarian cockade is perfect too, but it has to be worn on the other side

A great helmet for sure, and the model used until much later in artillery regiments was identical (left), besides the plate that on yours is the simplified version (leaves are gone), similar to the model worn, for instance, on late Chevau-leger helmets (right).
Congratulations James;

Amy- nice helmet, my helmet above does not have wing nuts, However, wing nuts are seen on Bavarian helmets of this period, I have another one that does have the wing nuts! they are very cool and I have only ever seen them on Bavarian...

Yes Amy, both of the helmets shown have plates attached with wing nuts.

Think I am having hallucinations ](*,)
