French dragon officer helmet and képi

Post by Francobritishcollect » Sun Aug 11, 2019 6:14 am

Dear All

A small grouping for a French dragon officer From 1910 into the first month of WWI.

That type of helmet was used on what were still the grand charges of the French cavalry against the invading German army until it was consider entirely inadequate, towards the end of 1914.

Best

Alex

😀

Just noticed it ! Those things are far too shiny. Just imagine what it would be like wearing one of those whilst charging on a bright sunny day 😱😱😱😱

True but if you look at period photos they wore cloth covers on these helmets to prevent the “shine”.

Not quiet!
The Garde républicaine or Garde de Paris, bear the coat of arms of Paris instead of the grenade.
But they look quiet similar.

In fact: The Garde Républicaine wears the helmet with the "houpette" on top of the front edge of the "comb". "Cuirassier style". The Dragons helmet is without the houpette. The Belgian Cuirassier "Lionhead" 1843-1863 helmet has this part as well.
