Fez and Colonial Headgear

Post by Peter_Suciu » Sat Jun 09, 2012 7:39 pm

Here are some other colonial headgear I acquired recently.

A Fez to the King's African Rifles- This is post-WWII, but the same style of headgear was used for 50 years.

A cap - not sure if it is accurate to call it a pillbox as it is oval and not round - from the Malay State Volunteer Rifles.

Something different as it isn't British. This is a soft fez to the Spanish Tarbuch de Regulares, the Muslim troops serving in North Africa under Franco. This could be anywhere from 1940 to 1970... probably a bit later, but another interesting piece.

Sorry that was a bit off topic!
Back to headgear.
Here is the die to make the pith helmet insigna for the "police judiciaire" those insigna's are extremly rare; I never saw one!
The next die is to make a other even extremly rare "speciale police" pith helmet insigna.

Force Publique African wood carved stool

Post by Olskiptooth » Tue Sep 18, 2012 7:56 pm

Very interesting Force Publique wood carved stool.
Radial pattern on top showing a goat and a snake with a stalk-like plant.
It looks like it is made with inlaid copper coil.
The legs are made up of the heads of Force Publique guards with their traditional fez hats. Probably from the early days of the Force.

I am bringing it to the VMFA later this week to get a second opinion.

Belgian colonial stuff is hard to get, and prices went from dirt cheap to high tops!
I got frustrated, as I couldn't find any more objects to add to that part of the collection, for a long time now.
Even tought of selling the entyre collection.
And then out of the blue I managed to lay hand on thise,to me quiet impressive ,uniform pieces of the last mayor of a major city in formal Belgian Congo.
Hise cap head band and sleeve-parts to transforme the service dress into a parade uniforme.
Public and military functions where mostly one in the organisation and governance of Belgian Congo, that is how nearly every body in every service had a uniform, and a equivalent rank in the military, or para-military organisation.

Not very pleasant to ear that "an advanced collector actually gave a thumbs down" in a PM (to someone else!), on the fez I posted here.
So I am (finaly!!) prepared to open the debat. These items are very rare, and you will not find them on fleemarkets or car boot sales.
I get most of them from veterans who kept them all that time.
My father is the chairman of such a veterans association, and that open's some doors! ;-)
Not only the items are hard to find but pictures are as well.
Finally found some , so please compare the fez to the one on the picture taken in Léopoldville in the early 50 ties!

After many months of not finding anything; I got lucky ...again... in a short laps of time.
Finaly found a good "Congo star"; the long service medal.
And in addition a redduction of the medal, not the miniature, but a size in between (those are realy hard to find!).
You will get to see a lot of Congo Stars being offerd, but most of them are not time pieces, many were produced in the late 70 'ties to satisfy the demande on the collectors market.

That's very interesting about the high fez. Prior to this they used the lower fez. My understanding is that hte British fezzes tended to have the tassle that more like a pull cord on drapes. That's what one colleague has explained.

Hello Kris,
It is, but I have the impression Peter and Chris (ukturkcollector) haven't noticed it...
Pretty nice one but too expensive given the fact it has no emblem or insignia whatsoever... (if it was up to me, I would've had that nice maker's mark on the outside :) )

According to a colleague it is a civilian fez merely marked in German, but not in the least military. It a $50 item on a good day.

Latest find; the badge(ID/ dogtag) of a person who served in the Belgian Weermacht / force publique in Belgian Congo.
That army was founded in 1885 to protect and help the Belgian kolonialists in Congo.
Only 100.000 European men served in that army from the start till the end in 1960.
So imagine my surprise finding a legitimation badge / dog tag with a number as low as thise one.
The coat of arms of Congo appearing on the badge tells it was used during the periode 1885 untill 1908, the time Congo was the private property of king Leopold II.
Any Belgian Weermacht item of that periode (before 1908) is very rare to find.
I think I must be able to find out to who the badge belonged with the number it bears, that might bring out a other surprise.....
;-)

I decided to cut down my Congo collection a while ago, but the items keep on knocking at my door....so I let them in.
Here you got the 3 kind of cap's for Belgian officials.
Going from a gouvernor's cap (high ranking officers), to a administrator (officers), to the lower echelon (NCO, in thise case a postal official!).
