Repairing A Felt Pickehaube

Hey guys if there is interest , I took a few pics as I was repairing a felt that I got off of E-bay a few months ago.

It was a mish mash of parts gray spike brass posts and a brass plate.

I got it at a reasonable price and with the damage I thought that I could handle it.

When I got it in hand I found out that the eagle was HOT GLUED TO THE FRONT OF THE HELMET.

One more hurdle I did not count on.

So here we go.

Image

After I peeled off the wappen. NO EASY TASK !!

Image

As I was shaving off the hardened hot wax , I kept on slipping with the knife as I was cutting.
So it was better to protect the surrounding area so as not to cut it up.

After shaving the wax.

Next step plug the hole that was the size of a quarter.

Image

Where am I going to get a match ? Under the spike .
I held a piece of tape under the large hole and traced it.
Then I cut the tape out and stuck it on the area that that I wanted to use as a plug

Here I am fitting the plug.

I did skip a few steps after I glued the patch I had to sand it to the contours of the helmet .

I took the helmet to Home Depot to get a paint match.
The first try was a little dark .
So I went down to get the paint a little lighter.
Still not quite right but there are things that can be done to make the paint lighter.

Image

With a little of spot sanding and my trusty felt tipped pins I was able to blend things in.
The final result looked like smudged dirty felt. The hole is gone. :thumb up:

I repeated the process inside as well.

Now prepairing the donar hole .
Same process but I am working with white felt for the patch.
It was actually a little easier because white takes coloring a little better .

Just a little more touch up and I have it.
The loops on the Garde plate were no were near to the holes on the helmet.
But a grey Wurt plate was

I do have a liner for it that will go in whenever.

Should I change out those brass posts for steel ?

Or keep them ?

Feed back is welcome.

Very nice job. I've restored the shape of a felt helm, but I'm not too sure I'd want to under take patching a hole. It appears that mixed metal parts on these was not unheard of.

I would definitely changed out the posts to m15 steel. Then the whole helmet will match and you will have a perfect example of a complete Wurttemberg felt helmet.

I like the m15 plate, I see you scored that one from Age of Kings........ :D

That is a clever solution to restore a felt helmet , would never come across that idea
