Don't like the way this guy is pictured with this trophy helmet. The museum allowed this show? The reporter/photographer could/should have done this with much more respect!

Yes. The story may be true, but the artifact doesn't match it. As you said, non-officer helmet and it also looks as if the bullet entered the cape, then exited through the skull. Pretty tricky way to shoot a guy off of horseback (unless the Germans were already in retreat and this guy was ducking). Also a rather poorly written article.
I really do need to know more about this....
