Just a quick update. My mother has decided to keep the hat in the family for now! It will be stored in a wooden box packed with acid free paper, to preserve for future generations. Thank you everyone for your help!

This is a bear skin hat that my great grandpa brought back from France after WW1. He called it a “Death Head Hussar”. My Mom has kept it safely in storage since he gave it to her as a teenager. Folks on Reddit and Wehrmacht Awards Forum seem to think it's from "Brunswick hussar regiment 17"...
