Appreciate the input, no idea what gewobelded means.
I read your article on the Fahring, intersting. SO is this for sure a train Battalion? Is it for mounted troops?
Thanks,
Jim
Great, here are some more pics. But dang, I don't see any enamel.
Still, if original WWI I will be really happy, probably start learning about the guard units so I can try to imagine the history it could have seen.

Thanks for the info, I now have a 1888 rifle on display in the front room :D
I looked both inside and out with a magnifying glass, I just see the the two holes for mounting the front crest, no repairs.

Seems like a fairly nice felt pickelhaube. Seems a little odd having the green spike with brass eagle, too bad it has the stiched repair but the chin strap is great.
I am figuring maybe late 1915 manufacture. Any thoughts are welcome.

I understand completely and am also a believer that I am simply a custodian of the historical pieces I "own" and am always trying to learn better how to preserve. Personally, I have most of my luck finding military and police weapons and am always sad when a light coat of oil was not applied in...
Hmm, interesting. Figured it could go either way.
He has another that was in better shape at one time. I will borrow that one to clean up next time I am over to his place.
