Hi Ron, Yes it's painted on wood panel. It is quite pitted in places and not planed smooth. I didn't realise that about the trenches. I've only ever seen the muddy, uncomfortable ones!

Hello, I've just acquired a wonderful WW1 portrait of a German soldier off a seller on ebay. Can anyone identify the uniform for me? I've tried looking on google but I'm finding it a bit non conclusive. I've been trying to find out what the white piping on the shoulder boards signifies...
