Dragoon Helmet

I can’t help thinking that these guys were amongst the lucky ones, on both sides, taken prisoner in the early days of the war, thus avoiding the carnage of the next four years.

Some more period picts from german soldiers arriving in Le Palais.

First pict says that the 7 guys in the front of the prisonners are "bandits" that are in prevention of council of war...Are they german soldiers too? It seems that they could be officers

The second picts shows three german officers disembarking in Le Palais. The first one is from a Husaren-Regiment.

Wayne,

PM me an email so if I see something I will let you know.

John,

I haven't been looking at EM Dragoon helmet prices lately as I purchased mine for $990 about 5 years ago and used that as my benchmark. If $2k is the going rate for a EM dragoner helmet then it is what it is.

Mine is not as beautiful as Argonnes! Absolutely fantastic research!

Here is my helmet, so you know what I am basing my comparison from (And if any one has any info on Dragoneer Schmitt 14th Dragoner 2nd Squadron I would be really appreciative!):

I suspect "bandits" is used here as a disparagement for german officers or ringleaders. In my understanding they have been separated and were placed under special observation that they could not cause riots or outbreaks.
It’s interesting that the paramedics are openly shown as prisoners of war, which was not easily possible because of the Geneva Conventions, right?

Sandy,

I believe that the 1st Geneva Convention only prohibited attacks on Hospitals and Mobile Medical facilities. I suspect that any Medics, Doctors or other medical personal captured in battle or who have surrendered would be treated as any other military prisoner but may have had special duties later on while imprisoned. This may be why the German Medics shown in the photo would have probably been given more responsibilities by the French (probably why they are at the front of the line) in organizing and caring for the German prisoners.

Well, John, your DR14 is not that bad!! (y)

As Mr SCHMITT was an OYV, this could be his Eigentum helmet as he wore it before the war. We can presume that SCHMITT has been later promoted to Leutnant der Reserve, because we can find a Leutnant der Reserve Eitel Friedrich SCHMITT (5. Eskadron DR14) which has first been mentioned as missed on the 15.02.1915 and in a late publication of January 1916, as deceased because of his wounds. At this time, the DR 14 war at the Yser front.
