This is my favourite "find". It was being sold as a German M18 helmet by a dealer in the UK a while back.
It is in fact an Austrian manufactured stahlhelm by Berndorf, often referred to as the Hungarian model.
The bonus with this one is someone has painted a big white dot on the rear and at first glance this spoils the look but is in fact a wartime practice used by Austrian troops to aid in identification when advancing and to try to prevent friendly fire casualties. It was not just used by assault troops but also recon and wire repair patrols. the practice was adopted from white material being sown onto the rear of field caps earlier in the war.
