Two Mecklenburgs: One Artillery Regt 24 NCO and the other IR89 other ranks

Very nice .
While I have collected since 1970
I have never understood the different spike with the small ball on top of it
What years was it worn like this ??
Thanks
Steve

Steve,

The spike on this one is not as per regulations, as correctly advised by 911Car they were replaced by the Prussian style spike in 1895.
This helmet is dated 1908 way after the spike was discontinued so immediately begs the question is it in fact a Frankenstein or maybe another example of the use of obsolete parts and re-use of military kit by frugal Prussian or in this case Mecklenburg authorities.

Personally I like the non standard examples and having inspected it I am quite happy that all the bits are original to the helmet.
It's what I call a Hybrid, old style meets new, as opposed to a straight forward Franky. I also have a 1871 pattern helmet with 1891 "button" chin strap attachments dated 1878 that was worn after 1897.............

These examples are fabulous talking points on what may and may not have been worn, made, or tolerated by the military authorities.

The other clear option, the elephant in the room, is that it could also be a fake but that's the risk of collecting I guess.

cheers Tony

I think I am remembering, this helmet was offered by H. Weitze. Sorry to say that this spike with ball top has absolutely nothing to do on this helmet! Look at the difference of the patina...It´s obviously that the spike did not get old together with the rest of the helmet. It´s a late replacement....Otherwise is the helmet a real beauty! It will be a real challenge to find the correct spike...But not impossible!

Late parts on early helmets are not the problem, because of lack of parts, as you say, especially after the mobilisation 1914 (mixed war helmets). But old parts on brand new helmets produced in peace time....Always a bad sign for me, but these are just my two cents... At the opposite, old parts on war productions have their legitimation. Knowing Weitze and his "agility" to assemble and disassemble helmets.....Sorry to say that.....

My own example of the I/GR89, 3 Cie, with the original correct screwable spike.

Tony every day that passes makes it harder to return. If you are not fully confident and pleased, return it while you can.
I would NOT say what other people said .I would just simply state that
after inspection I do not feel the spike and base areoriginal to the helmet .
I am not pleased with it and I wish to return it
If you bought it at a show
that might make it more difficult
the seller might say that you saw it in person
and had an inspection ?
