This one fits into the information you kindly posted from the 1915 magazine article regarding ersatz pickelhaube manufacture and the protective cover of black primer on felt helmets.

This one has the black covering and an overpaint of field grey. It was being sold as a felt helmet but I was pleased to see upon it's arrival it is in fact cardboard.

An uncommon ersatz helmet
Fascinating a new one on me, could you add a photo of the complete interior . Thanks Rob Here you go, Rob. It seems that the usual round metal plate was never present inside the shell under the spike.
