Teaching again at my old Highschool

Howdy all! I hope everyone is well!

Well, round 2!

Today was outstanding! I was invited in by a German language teacher at my old high school to talk about imperial Germany while also displaying my items!

This time the classes were far more involved! A lot of students were enamored with the headgear, so many questions and smiling faces. Truly made my day getting to teach once again in front of classes.

The display,

Talking about the foundation of imperial Germany,

Here I am talking about my great great grandfather,

Me explaining the transition from pickelhaubes to Stahlhelms,

Explaining the model 1915 and how they had removable tops,

Explaining the model 1895/1896 used in the early war,

Explaining school caps in german schools,


Overall, this was a very fun day! I love brining the collection out for classes like this, getting to educate the youth using historical artifacts is really something else!

Lucky students to get such a great presentation with supporting artifacts. Certainly does bring it to life. And you being able to personalize it with your Great Great Grandfather’s picture and medal really does bring it to life. Not just a story in a textbook.

Nice to see you employing your collection as a teaching tool. It certainly makes your collecting more meaningful than just a personal acquisition of "stuff". Some kids learn best by seeing and touching things, and they would have enjoyed this as much as you did.

I'm a fairly regular presenter at the Ottawa Military History Club and I enjoy doing it. In fact, I'm scheduled to do a presentation on "The Evolution of Headgear in the Imperial German Army" which will be a "Show and Tell" type of session. If you're interested I can share my Powerpoint deck with you. Maybe some ideas you could use for one of your next engagements.

Really a wonderful thing you're doing Dane I have to also say they are lucky kids. Looks like they are not only learning German in public school but being taught and shown Imperial German History through show and tell with German Militaria.

I don't know what state this is in, but I can tell which state it isn't.

I can tell you this, it’s up in the grand old state of Washington in the PNW, although this state can be pretty sensitive when it comes to historical topics, I’ve noticed that folks aren’t afraid to talk about them.

Thank you so much Sander, I wished the same thing when I was in school, it’s a big reason why I do this!

Indeed it does! Always trying to add new pieces when I can!

That’s always how I like to be taught history, seeing artifacts and being able to make that connection between the past and present. Seeing it come to life makes it awesome!
