    M49 Hessian

Wonderful helmets, the older ones fascinate me. Am I correct that the one with the silver star plate is Sachsen Meiningen? Would it also be possible to see a close-up photo when convenient?

    M49 Hessian

Here's a photo of one, not as tall and probably a later model, that has the small cap on the top.

That's a nice way to keep his memory alive from so long ago.

    Royal Hanoverian Army

Great tschakos. Most likely worn at the battle of Langensalza, where the Hanoverians fought and won their last battle as an independent country in 1866.

    Unique and beautiful early pickelhaube

For those who may be interested, I came across online this quite exquisite pickelhaube that was offered for sale on Sotheby's Auctions closing in December. It was described as the personal helmet of Duke Carlo III of the Duchy of Parma in Italy. To my knowledge Parma was the only Italian...

Looking for photos of Schaumburg-Lippe Flügeladjutant's Pickelhaube

Hi: The first photo is from Militarische Kopfbedeckungen der Kaiserzeit by Reiner Hermann. It shows a very similar emblem without the eagle. The second photo is of what is described as a Schaumburg-Lippe gendarmerie helmet with the same emblem. Hope this helps.

    My Collection

What a fabulous collection. Particularly interesting to me are the pieces from before 1870, the bell top shakos, pickelhauben, and the 1866 war kepi. It would be wonderful to see close up photos of these. Thanks for sharing.

    1850 Baden Mannschaften Helmet Spike

Hi: Attached are two photos that I have accumulated over the years of what appear to be early pre 1867 Baden pickelhaubes with fluted spikes that do not have officer stars on the spike base. Unsure of the date of either of the helmets, but the lack of stars suggests they are ordinary ranks...

    Pickelhaube identification

Attached is a copy of a Knoetel Uniforkunde plate of Hessen Kassel Infantry uniforms in 1866 that includes a soldier from the Leib Guard Regiment. He is depicted wearing a white plume on his helmet and the cut of the collar and the cuffs seem to match those on the tunic in the photo.

    Pickelhaube identification

Pardon my attempt at sleuthing, but since your great grandfather was born somewhere in Hessen in 1838, it is likely he would have served in the army of one of the three independent Hessen states that existed prior to the war in 1866. To my knowledge, only one of these, the Electorate of Hessen...

Helmets model 1842 wanted for sale or exchange

Thank you Herbert for sharing your incredible collection. I too have a fascination with these taller early pickelhauben and the variety of the details and wappen of the different states. I have never before seen these two of your helmets. Would it be possible to see a more detailed photo...
