    Hobby Room (photos added 12/16)

Hello Ron, Congratulations with your collection and the way of displaying it. Your French helmet is a M1872/1874 Dragon helmet. A Cuirassier helmet is identical, but has a "houpette" (a shaving brush-like ornament) on the "cimier" or comb. Johan

Some complementary information: a very similar helmet was offered by Hermann Historica in München in 04/2009, auction 57, lot 4281, a Dragoon helmet early 19th century, Denmark, but with another plate, showing a star with a blank center. Please check also their web site with free catalogues and...

    Wachtmeister pelzmütze

There were many kinds of skins used by Unteroffiziere, especially the rare rank of Wachtmeister. The sort of lining in your Pelzmütze is certainly possible, I have a 2.Leibhusaren Rgt. Wachtmeister Pelzmütze with a completely silk lining, also in (faded) white. The Fangschnur is the correct one...

    M1867 helmets

It must have something to do with WW1 I guess, I personnaly prefer also the older helmets. But as an example, about a year ago I had a GdC M1860/1867 helmet for sale with eagle (modified 1870 but still with the 4 bolts) in absolutely superb condition, star 1860 with the motto soldered on, not...

    M1867 helmets

Strangely enough, here in Belgium the majot interest for collecters lies in 1897 helmets, not before. A good line infantry M1867 will cost yoy about 1100€ but will be difficult to sell or trade afterwards, at least here. Johan

Pickelhaube M95 Hessen Fahnrich Leib Garde Inf. Regt. 115

A question to all of you experienced collectors: I have a Grenadiermütze M1894 with a wearer's name in it on a cloth tag and I wondered how I could get information about that particular Grenadier. Logically, my first thought is the Bundesarchiv. Does anyone have information how to get in...

Pickelhaube M95 Hessen Fahnrich Leib Garde Inf. Regt. 115

For those interested in old German handwriting: http://www.suetterlinschrift.de/Lese/Kanzlei1.htm Remark: the supposed G could well be a Z in old Kanzleischrift, meaning that the name would be Zaub and not Gaul. Anyhow, very, very nice helmet. Johan

Pickelhaube M95 Hessen Fahnrich Leib Garde Inf. Regt. 115

The writing looks like Sütterlin, a typical Prussian way of writing that replaced the old Kanzleischrifture officially in 1915, but in use long before that date. Developed by Ludwig Sütterlin (1865-1917). The last letter is then a b, not an l. By the way, Sütterlin-writing was forbidden by...

    Belguim M1841/42 Kurassier helmet

You are absolutely right Francis, I am confusing with the markings 1 or 2 on the small white metal cuirass in front of the "cimier" of the helmets Mod. 1831. As far as I know, there were only 2 makers: DAILY and FONSON, DECHANGE being also producer of the first pattern of helmet? Best regards...

    Belguim M1841/42 Kurassier helmet

Hello Jim, Sorry for this very late reply, I just saw this item today. Helmet is a model 1843 trooper helmet, in extremely good condition and complete: the black wool ball on the houpette is hardly ever there, as is the lining which is in calf leather and very fragile. There is a very good...

Why are Pickelhaubes so small ????

Hello Gus, I suppose you could be right but in auxology (the science concerning the size of men) there are no statistics about the Masaï (from which the Dinka and Tutsi tribes are a part). Johan

Why are Pickelhaubes so small ????

Hello Newbe, Years ago, when I studied sociology, demography was a part of my studies. The average length of male persons (know by deduction from the length of skeletons) evolved like this: around 3000 BC in ancient Egypt people had an average lenth of only 140 cm. By the year 30 this was 150...
