I completed this project a couple of days ago: Overall, this restitch went pretty well. The black felt problem was overcome and I am now converted to using "blunt" needles. :)

One last thing to note here regarding this helmet...the materials used were felt and fibre (visors), producing a very light weight helmet. These are also very resistant to fluctuations of humidity. In my experience dry conditions plus heat are the primary causes of "leather haube" problems. A...

Hi Sandy....my opinion only....it looks like an older reproduction to me. Why?: chunky brass buckles with no rounded edges and most important, the leather is dyed on the flesh side. In my experience all original straps were only dyed on the smooth hair side. Again I could be totally wrong.

Some progress today as I completed the first pass of stitching across the visor. I also put the trim back on as unlike most visors the stitching of this one did not go under the trim. I have stitched a reddish orange felt officer helmet before which obviously was much easier than this. However...

Some additional info: This is an Awes piece as the underside of the spike base is marked as such. The visors here are also "fibre" the type used on Imperial visor caps. As we say in CN the stitching of this piece is "slow sledding", I have to fight for every stitch when I am coming up from the...

And "sew" it begins! :) T pins in place and holes lined up. I am using much finer cotton thread on this because this is what was used originally. I thought that I could leave the scales on but the thread kept getting caught which adds to the difficulty. The restitch puts a lot of stress on...

Black Hole. The entire shell is made of molded black felt. Consequently, the stitch holes on the inside can not be seen easily unlike with a leather shell. The only way to do this is to light it up with bright sunshine.....stitch outside on a full sun day!

No Steve, nothing to do with IR 93. Just having a bit of fun here, black refers to the composition of the helmet and sun describes environmental conditions. :) Thanks Doug, hope you and Tony are having a great time!
