Interestingly this little tag fell out of it - quite old. I think it says Armee Kavl (Cavalry)? Supports the Dragoon theory.

My latest acquisition and my first Schirmmutze. Advertised as DR Regt 22 and Tony S. says it could be. I am very happy with it. :) Peter

I am pretty sure it is a British Home Service or Guard Helmet chinstrap. Like on mine. But could be that French one as well.

Yes the Germans do memorials very well. I remember seeing the U Boat Memorial at Laboe and being amazed when I went into the part under ground.
