Pioneer Battalion 10 EM 1895 pickelhaube

Hi Brian, No offence taken. I just couldn’t resist tweaking you a bit about eBay UK. As far as the helmet is concerned, would you advise replacing the brad for the visor strip or just leave well alone? On a different topic, I am constantly amazed by the way you bring forlorn hopes back to...

Pioneer Battalion 10 EM 1895 pickelhaube

Brian, thanks for your comments. Given your views on ebay uk I thought you might like to know it was bought there, Buy It Now! Thanks very much also to everybody else who has commented so positively. Pickelhaubes aren't my main area of collecting interest, so it was a bit of a leap of faith...

Pioneer Battalion 10 EM 1895 pickelhaube

Since buying this helmet I have found some examples online of PB10 officer helmets, but not of EM examples. Are they particularly rare? Any views? Patrick

Pioneer Battalion 10 EM 1895 pickelhaube

Hi Philippe, Not good news- the fittings are magnetic. I haven’t come across this test before. When I looked closely at my photographs after posting I thought the end fittings look to be cut out by hand and also show file marks. However, as I said, whilst I’d prefer a genuine chinstrap, I can...

Pioneer Battalion 10 EM 1895 pickelhaube

I got the chance at the weekend to buy this helmet, but had to make a very quick decision. It is clearly marked PB 10 1913 and has the Peninsula Waterloo bandeau on the wappen. I knew enough to know that this bandeau was worn by some units with Hanover connections but had no idea if this...

From the British Dragoons to Household Cavalry by Peter Suciu

Tony, Sorrry, should be ‘Head Dress of the British Heavy Cavalry’. Don’t know how I messed that up! I have eight heavy cavalry helmets. I’m by no means an expert, but am happy to help with any advice. Drop me a pm any time. It would be a bit of pay back for all the times I’ve used the...

From the British Dragoons to Household Cavalry by Peter Suciu

Tony, If you don’t already have it, I highly recommend David Rowe’s 2004 book, ‘Hemets of the British Heavy Cavalry’. Published by Schiffer and there are quite a few copies around, generally for about 50 GBP. Loads of information and fabulous photographs. He also produced ‘Head Dress of the...

    Bavarian EM felt ersatz

We have a one year old Irish Setter- inquisitive, energetic and very bright. Lovely, but really hard work. I would happily settle for moments!

    Private purchased NCO-Helmet M1871 of a Prussian Infantry-Regiment

A really nice helmet, congratulations. The first haube I ever bought was an excellent condition named Prussian 1871 OYV, not that in my ignorance I knew any of that when I bought it. I sold it years ago along with a superb Saxon reserve artillery NCO- bad mistake In both cases! Oh well! Patrick

    Chinstrap with Rounded Buckles

Brian, speaking as a Brit, this is a rather sweeping condemnation. I have bought and sold a number of pickelhaubes on eBay UK over the years, and I can assure you they haven’t been fakes. Many have been posted here and been met with approval. It seems to me that there are fake items everywhere...

Bearskin cap of the English Guard

Lot 253 in Marlows (UK) auction of 28 September - you’ll have to be quick! No idea if it’s authentic. If it is and has no plume it’s Scots Guards. The other four regiments had plumes. On the other hand it could be to one of these regiments and be missing the plume. Leather backing to chin chain...

    Muckleburgh Military Collection Norfolk UK

I recently visited this collection to see the museum of the Suffolk and Norfolk Yeomanry Regiments. However, the bulk of the collection contains tanks, guns and other vehicles, many of the items in working order. These aren't really my thing but it's quite a collection with some very impressive...

Prussian Artillery Office in great shape, all original and untouched

Hi Nick, Think you mean Prussian Reservist. Yes, sold, and money converted into a British heavy cavalry helmet of the type you’ve seen. I’m enjoying your photographs. Did you get moved? Patrick

Prussian Artillery Office in great shape, all original and untouched

I agree with Bruno, and I would always get the seller to describe it as an antique ‘hat’, not ‘helmet’ when sending here to Great Britain. ‘ Helmet’ raises too many issues. If I remember correctly, Amy had that problem in Singapore? patrick
