Well, they may be big, but as someone who has more than doubled in size as I've gotten older, and having experienced first hand the armys prejudice agains overweight soldiers, I have to say at least these "big" guys are still serving and still defending their country.
I guess I'm being dense, I know there was a war going on, but I find it hard to understand why a Landsturm unit is guarding the ducal palace. I would have thought whatever regiment had performed that duty in peacetime would be performing it all the way up to the end.
While not as heavy as everything else that's been discussed, the first thing that struck me about this photo is how much the guy on the far right looks like Kaiser Wilhelm II.
Tony,
A thousand apologies, I meant no libel towards the greatest breed to walk the earth! I had a senior moment and now that Gus has pointed out that it's a drawing of a pig, I now clearly see the cloven hooves and snout, somehow that didn't really catch my attention before. :?
Jim,
Thank you for providing the page information for the other corrections.
I can't speak for anyone else, but for me no apologies are necessary. Stuff happens! I'm just glad to have your book to use as a reference. I'm really glad you put it together.
Jim,
I'm penciling in changes in my Field Guide, so I want to make sure I understand you correctly. All three Garde Stars on page 183, that is, Fig 12.0A, 12.0B, and 12.0VA are all supposed to say 1860 instead of 1806, correct?
My only experience with calling the American eagle something else had to do with the insignia of a US Army warrant officer. When I went through Warrant Officer Candidate School we "lovingly" referred to the insignia as the "squashed bug".
Ron,
As a lover of heraldry, and an armiger myself, I have to protest and say, I lovvvvvvve the Polish eagle. It's a very, very majestic heraldic bird. :salute:
Wow, Arran!!! Probably my favorite infantry pickelhaube of them all. Now if I could just win the Lotto and get me one of those, one Garde du Corps officer's helmet with eagle, and one Sacshen Garde-Reiter-Regiment officer's helmet with lion and I'd be set for life! Well, maybe just a couple...
I can't believe the seller would describe this helmet as possibly British when it plainly has the Swedish coat of arms on the wappen! What an idiot!!!
