    DDR Stahlhelm M1956/70

Believe it or not this helmet was designed during WWII. Research began shortly after the Poland invasion in the fall of 1939. This helmet used by the DDR was originally designated B/II, and the design was presented to Hitler in 1944. He rejected the design for political reasons even though years...

    Carbines and bayonets

Evening Gents Although it is correct that cavalrymen did not have bayonets as a side arm in 1914, according to Anthony Carter, the S84/98nA was introduced in 1915 to provide a short bayonet for the Cavalry, along with the field artillery and technical troops. So things were evolving as the war...

    The Great War Dawning

Joe congratulations! I just found out about this yesterday, as I received a copy of the Verlagsprogramm 2014 from Verlag Militaria in the mail. Have you seen the review that Verlag wrote about this book? They are impressed.

    See anything unusual?

Almost forgot this fellow at left center (Thanks Ron). It certainly does look like a Prussian Schutzmannschaft pickelhaube. Joe has an absolutely outstanding photo of a soldier wearing such a helmet that is as clear an image as you could ever hope for!

    See anything unusual?

ps1139b by joerookery, on Flickr I do believe this is the same type of helmet worn by the fellow at bottom right of the newest photo. Joe identifies it as a Prussian Kommunalpolizei model 1896. A match perhaps?

    See anything unusual?

Ron that is a terrific comparison, Thank You for posting these! If I were to guess, and this IS a guess, I would think that in the photo there is way too much glare going on for it to be the Kaiserliche Schutzmannschaft type in the top example, and could be more like the bottom Prussian...

    See anything unusual?

Now on the right side of the photo we have the same neat mix of head gear and rifles, but now look at the fellow kneeling at bottom right. Can you notice the distinct helmet wappen and spike? If only he came out clearer, perhaps sunlight has reflected off of the brass hardware causing the...

    See anything unusual?

Breaking down the photo in the left half, we the sender in his pork pie hat identified in the photo with an "X", and the mix of ersatz filz and leather M95 pickelhauben. Also note that these men wear a single ammo pouch, probably assigned to a wache in a rear area, perhaps even in Hamburg. On...

    See anything unusual?

Time to revive this thread ( almost 6 1/2 years later!). A question I missed back in 2007 Joe, so do you think they are RJR 76? Recently I came across what looks like your average group photo of an unidentified unit of Alte Armee troops. The sender has identified himself on the photo with an...

    Faschinenmesser

So without the slots, it must be straight Swedish, no?

    Faschinenmesser

Just seeing this for the first time today. Is there a slot on the opposite side of the hilt? If so it would be a Schleswig-Holstein Hirschfänger for the Luttich Dornbüchse M1849. The story behind this model is that they were used by the Prussians after being captured from the former...

    Schutztruppe Deutsch-Südwest Afrika - Sanitäts - Feldwebel

No, I am sorry to say that there is no name at all attached to this photo. Thank you so much for identifying the decorations! I have to go back and check, but I believe that on the Colonial German Uniforms website has many ribbon bars with mixed Saxon Armee & Deutsch-Südwest Afrika awards...
