    Some Tough Old Buzzards

Possibly a direct connection between the Altona event and a US event? Our US "48er" veterans (many also Civil War veterans) erected a comparable monument in Davenport, Iowa at the same time as the Altona dedication in March 1898. The selection of a boulder like the Altona monument might be...

    Some Tough Old Buzzards

I wonder when and why the 1848 memorial bronze plaque was removed and the boulder was intentionally overturned and buried face down? That's a lot of work. The Altona city administration doesn't seem to know much about it according to the article.

    Some Tough Old Buzzards

Hello, The community of Altona-Hamburg may have more photos of this event. I found this fascinating web-site of the efforts by the community to clean up their parks and restore their monuments. If you scroll down you will see a story on the efforts to recover the 1848-1898 monument to the war...

    Some Tough Old Buzzards

Good point! Here's another photo. They're all tall. By coincidence, my dragoon officer's helmet, the same as the one worn by the veteran in the photo, is an exceptionally large size compared to later pickelhaubes.

    Some Tough Old Buzzards

Since Herbert has generated some new discussion regarding the early tall helmets, I thought this photo of the "48er" veterans who gathered in Altona, Hamburg to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the First Schleswig Holstein War makes a complimentary comparison of the evolution of the helmets...

Helmets model 1842 wanted for sale or exchange

Sorry to keep bugging everybody but this is my favorite historical period. The unit that wore this helmet is also unknown to me. Can you say a few more words about it?

Helmets model 1842 wanted for sale or exchange

Thank you again and again The guard helmet with the white plume is a fantastic piece. There is very little information on the plume trichter for this period. I would like to learn more some time.

That's a beautiful kurassier helmet. Is it an M1843 originally?

I just wanted to add that your collection of shakos is equally fascinating. That death's head hussar shako is amazing.

I collect in this area and would like to see more details of your collection. Attached is one that I have not seen before. Can you tell us more about it? This period fascinates me. Chris Dale has posted some remarkable examples of M42's on his web-site. I am currently restoring a Swedish...

M 1915 Garde du Corp helmet

Fascinating!... and yet it makes me kind of sad. I wish I had still had it. I showed it to a collector who thought it was entirely made up. But there are always more treasures to look forward to. One thing I have learned from this site is to trust your instincts, don't listen to "experts"...

M 1915 Garde du Corp helmet

Thank you for the information on regimental deployment in the field and on parade. The remark on brass plated helmets may answer an enigma. This is an entirely brass plated steel helmet including spike with a stamped brass line eagleand brass chin strap fittings. I purchased in 1968 for $75.00...

M 1915 Garde du Corp helmet

Here is one I found easily. I don't remember the source. I think have others from way back. I'll look. Thinking of them as a ceremonial regiment, I didn't know the Garde du Corps were ever deployed in the field during war time which is why I find these helmets interesting.

M 1915 Garde du Corp helmet

I love these helmets and keep a file of images on them. What I have questions about however is what the Garde du Corps, Garde Kurassier, Garde Reiter regiments actually did when they wore them? Were they worn in Berlin with feldgrau uniforms on parade? Were they assigned special tasks in the...
