Apologies for the delayed reply. Unfortunately, the Tschako had some issues, which, after careful consideration and expert advice, prompted its return. Despite the disappointment, I can't speak highly enough of the vendor, who accepted the return of Tschako, after it had been in my possession...

Someone will be burned — badly, I fear

Yes! Eisenhüttenwerk Thale was the ONLY manufacturer of M18 "cut-out" helmets. Like Keith, I believe the eBay helmet was an original F. C. Bellinger (BF) M18 doctored to deceive. The bright orange rust around the liner band is a tip-off that artificial aging was involved as well. There were...

    Twelve-Year Hunt Concluded

In 2002, I purchased a magnificent IR 94 Landwehr officer's Pickelhaube from Brian Sanders that was perfect in all respects save one — the Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach Landeskokarde was bogus. The helmet is pictured in Head Dress of Imperial Germany: 1880-1916 by Paul Sanders...

    MAX Show 2014

Though I can't endorse the MAX wholeheartedly, I never come away empty handed. The drive is relatively short for me, and, for three years running, I have scored bigger coups in Monroeville than Louisville. For one thing, the venue size is manageable and I don't get burned out midway through...

    Braunschweigisches Inf.-Regt. Nr. 92

Thank you, Joe and James. I thumbed through all my references since bringing it home, and, in every example, the PENINSULA bandeau sits much higher on the lower arm of the cross — as with Karel's helmet. However, given the slits cut in the Helmadler of my helmet, and the proportions of the...

I should add that most of the gilt was worn away from the spike cone. The brass alloy appears to display a high percentage of copper, which most likely makes it Tombak.

    Braunschweigisches Inf.-Regt. Nr. 92

Hi Karel: You certainly have a discerning eye. =D> It was the absence of gilt on the laurel and oakleaves that concerned me most. As you know, gilt leaves are unique to I/II Battalions. The III Leibgarde Battalion did not employ gilt anywhere on its distinctive Totenkopf Wappen...

    Braunschweigisches Inf.-Regt. Nr. 92

Hi Brian! Thanks for looking and ringing in. The gilt covered screw posts are a concern as lead solder has puddled in some of the recesses. If the Wappen had been gilded after soldering, I wouldn't expect to see any trace of grey. It is mysterious, but I can live with it. What concerned...

    Braunschweigisches Inf.-Regt. Nr. 92

I suspect the pre-1913 I/II Battalion officer's helmet represents both the ultimate dream and worst nightmare for collectors of Pickelhauben. With so many frauds and fakes in circulation, one has to exercise extreme caution when approaching I.R. 92 as the prices for bona fide specimens are...

The first helmet of 2013, and it is a good one… get ready

The above is, of course, a playful tribute to an eye-popping post by the regrettably "departed" Tony Schnurr, who shared his brilliant IR.92 III Bat. officer with us in late 2009: http://www.pickelhaubes.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4696" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; However, my...

German China Expedition NCO Pickelhaube c1900?

To my eyes, the helmet is a decent and straightforward example of Reichslanden Elsaß-Lothringen mounted Gendarmerie. The liner is a detraction, but, with an starting price of $10.00, criticism seems pointless.
