Mint, unworn Pickelhauben with Talcum Powder

A very pragmatic and helpful opinion! As stated by several; I too would not own one.

Mint, unworn Pickelhauben with Talcum Powder

I agree mold is not the correct term for what we are talking about. And I agree that such a substance offers no protection to any leather it is present on.

Mint, unworn Pickelhauben with Talcum Powder

I agree. Your photo above my last post clearly presents some sort of mold which is present on the leather. No different than the mold on many leather field gear items. I have a mint M1860 officer (Lippe Detmold) Pickelhaube with no such mold.

Mint, unworn Pickelhauben with Talcum Powder

To me it is certainly an environmental matter, and present because the helmets have not been handled much over the years. No natural oils were introduced to the leather.

    Belgian beer.

Bavik is one of my favorites. Orval as well. Can't recall the names of the Belgian beers I have enjoyed when travelling there. We have a great Belgian restaurant just 10 miles from me; http://www.cafebruges.com/ The only place I have been to in the US where they prepare the Frites properly!

Fort de la Pompelle Museum Video

Hi Chris, One day, during my trips to Europe I will revisit that museum. Still need to see the Belgian Army Museum. WWI is not much of an interest of mine, so other priorities come first. Are there other interesting museums in that area? On my list is the new Franco-Prussian War museum near...

Fort de la Pompelle Museum Video

Thanks for posting the video. I was there in 1989 and recently found some photos I had. Big difference from then to now.

MAX Show 2020 Moving to York, Penn.

Superb location! For the OVMS, hobby, table holders, and me! Smack in the middle of the "militaria belt" and close enough to the population centers to have a much better "gate" than the Monroeville for sure, and probably Louisville also. Kudos to the OVMS! Could not have picked a better...

    Favorite Flea Markets?

For me Leipzig is my favorite. It, by far, is the best one in Europe now. Every month some folks travel pretty far to attend it. I have only been once a couple of years ago, and was shocked. Being born and raised in NJ, the flea markets there were superb up until the early 90s for militaria. PA...

The most important book – history

I did pick up the book from Stephan at the SOS. Looks great, and I have moved it to the top of my "must read" pile!

Feldgrau Krätzchen - Unissued or Just Brand New?

Mine has some rust on the national colors cockade. From what I understand they (who ever has them) is releasing them in small numbers. I was certainly cautious when I bought one. All of the other ones which turned up at the SOS went to dealers. Unissued items still have some aging and a certain...

Feldgrau Krätzchen - Unissued or Just Brand New?

I like the Krätzchen! In fact I bought an unissued one at the recent SOS. The first time I encountered one from "the hoard", and the French gentleman showed me a number of photos of the ones which were discovered.

    Help with New Pickelhaube

Peter, That is a very nicely marked Pickelhaube! Here are a couple of M1874 pouches IDed to the same regiment. Koblenz is a great city, and I was last there a couple of months ago. Hopefully you will have time to visit some of its historical sites and museums. A wealthy German couple rebuilt...

    Pictures SOS 2019

Great items! Congrats on that M1860 artillery piece Amy. Is it dated and unit marked? Certainly would have been one I would have grabbed. Now that I see all the photos, I recognize some of you and a few came by my tables. The only non-WWII items I had were some WWI helmets. I was able to grab...
