    "Close" but no cigar...

    It appears to be copper grown in a tank solution; the silver on the back is likely the barrier plating to prevent the copper from eating through the gold plate. The gold finish was probably done by brush plating.

    The copper sometimes will "eat" through the plating as a galvano copy ages.

    Another Uhlan

    So the "future peacetime" helmet of an enlisted man could have a star with enamel? What about the cockade and the field badge?

    George Birringer RIP

    Sad to hear Mr. Birringer has passed away. He made excellent Pickelhaube chinstraps and was always glad to share his knowledge of the old helmets.

    What about this?

    The field badge on the mortarboard is worn in lieu of the state cockade. This may be a "parts" helmet. Here is a good reference for Tschapka features: http://www.abebooks.com/9783902526076/German-Cavalry-1871-1914-Uniforms-3902526076/plp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

    what is it ?

    Some people say these are from some sort of Third Reich tour guide group. The only other one I've seen was on a site known for fakes, though.
