    It reminds me of the donation boxes that were made from the steel helmets for the war drive. Maybe this is something similar? That cut appears to have been put there intentionally and looks big enough for an envelope/ bills.

    Getting better pictures of the inside of the shell would definitely help, but for his asking price it's definitely worth taking a better look at.

    It sounds like someone painted it. The chinstrap lugs are typically either brass for M95 helmets, Grey for M15 helmets or silver for certain units that had silver fittings.

    A good indication of fake helmets is a lack of detail in the metal work especially on the wappens (front plates), and the leather and liners will look brand new and often times the liners will look puffy compared to work 100+ year old helmets. I honestly have yet to see a fake helmet that looks...

    A small update on this long overdue project, I've sewn everything back together and I'm currently patching the tear in the skull and I thought some of you would get a kick out of my method of patching and reshaping the sunken skull. This has sat this way for about an hour now and is pretty steady.
