Austrian M17 Helmet with Original Issued Cover

The reinforcement discs sewn around the vent lug openings are made of leather, and the cover still retains the original twisted paper drawstring. Two safety pins are located toward the front/sides on either side of the hemmed edge of the cover. :-({|=

Austrian M17 Helmet with Original Issued Cover

Gottlieb u. Brauchbar manufactured M17 Austro-Hungarian Stahlhelm with its original issue tan cover. These first five pictures are the dealer's photos. They do the helmet and cover more justice than my pictures can for the moment. :-P

    German Gasmask M1916 Vs. 1917

Hi Ron, Very nice masks. Gus nicely covered the basic differences between the model 1916 and GM17 model canisters. The Gummimaske you have posted here is particularly interesting because it's a well preserved early 1915 model (aka Bandmaske). There are variations between the very early and...

    Bulgarian M16

Del, going by the domed liner pins and especially the shield, I think it's safe to say that it's not WW1 issue. Hans

    Bulgarian M16

Germany supplied 170 000 helmets to Bulgaria during WW1 as early as 1917. I think Austria-Hungary may have sent some as well. In the few wartime pictures I've seen of M16 helmets in Bulgarian service, none had a shield painted on the side. The helmet shown in your link would be a post-WW1...

M16 3 tone camo with unknown emblem

It's the second big house on the right after you cross the border. Key's under the mat. :^o

M16 3 tone camo with unknown emblem

Ron, the fingerprint was almost certainly left by the painter. I hoped that would stick out in the picture. I recall having at least 2 other camos with fingerprints in the paint. Thanks very much for the comments.

1915 Model Stick Grenade with 7 second fuse

Can't argue with that! Although no worries about the storage & climate conditions here Gus. When it's not wrapped in plastic in the damp basement, I have it drying out in direct sunlight for days at a time. :tard: Nothing some steel wool and a fresh coat of paint won't fix.

M16 3 tone camo with unknown emblem

E.T. 64 camo with a mysterious painted emblem consisting of a black cross over top a white diamond field. The emblem was painted directly onto the camo, but clearly prior to the application of the black dividing lines. The helmet reportedly was found last spring in an attic in Pennsylvania...

1915 Model Stick Grenade with 7 second fuse

Advances in technology meant that later grenades used much more effective explosives, which is why the M17 stick grenade had a smaller canister. The fuses became more reliable, and the later model grenades usually had 5 1/2 second fuses. The 1915 model and the more commonly found 1917 version...

1915 Model Stick Grenade with 7 second fuse

Stiehlhandgranate mit Brennzünder, introduced in 1915. From what I've been able to find out, this model (with this particular canister and the 7 second fuse) is apparently the very first manufactured version of the friction fuse variant of Stielhandgranate. It's in surprisingly good condition...

Ditto with the Ostasiatisches example below. In this case, the liner is cloth and the spike base is fixed to the helmet. My apologies for the terrible exterior shots. I will take better ones soon. Hans

    Battle Damaged 10th Company Garde-Division Helmet F.B. 62

There is a fairly new pinned section on this topic in the Walhalla forum that could really use your input Chip. (Hint hint). Hans Regarding the early post, yes Chip, I did mistook your mention of a "painted helmet" as referring to camo paint instead of the shield. My mind must have been in...

    Battle Damaged 10th Company Garde-Division Helmet F.B. 62

Thanks for your insightful views Chip. It's put even more questions into my head, and reminded me how much there is still to learn on this subject. You say you've seen a picture of the Commander of 1. Reg zu Fuss wearing a camo helmet? Do you mean Eulenburg-Wicken? That would be interesting...

    Battle Damaged 10th Company Garde-Division Helmet F.B. 62

Thanks for the comments Gents. I agree with you regarding the time-frame Chip. I think it was you who once suggested that the red (and black) company numbers were the earlier versions, and that they switched to white numbers later to improve visibility and that these tend to show up on...

    Battle Damaged 10th Company Garde-Division Helmet F.B. 62

I usually don't collect battle damaged helmets, but this one caught my eye due to the information and history it contains. It belonged to a soldier named Alsen of 10th Company in one of the Regiments of the elite Garde-Division. It has two areas on the right side showing what appears to be...

Austrian Stahlhelm mod. 1916 "square dip"

I don't collect Austrian helmets, but I find it interesting that the helmet has the Austrian variant chinstrap mounts. If this helmet was among the later batches sent from Germany that were painted and furnished by the K.u.K., it's odd that the liner would be German made - it looks like a...

    German Stahlhelm Manufacturer Codes 1916-18

Here is a complete list of WW1 German steel helmet manufacturers. The list includes the known shell sizes made by and limited to each manufacturer. It seems that Eisenhüttenwerke Thale was the only ironworks that made them in every size. ~Hans German Steel Helmet Manufacturers 1916 - 18...
