    Ostasiatisches Expeditionskorps 1903,Schutztruppen

I wouldn't have paid that price for it. The puggaree really threw me because it distorted the shape, making the dome seem shallower than I would expect. There are still too many things I don't like about it, and I wish I could see it in person.

    DOA Südwest Hat

I wrote a piece on these in 2018 for my MilitarySunHelmets.com website: https://www.militarysunhelmets.com/2018/the-german-schutztruppen-slouch-hat

I respect your opinion on the helmet Jay. I still have some questions, but the added photos help tell a fuller story. I still wouldn't spend a lot on it.

As I mentioned, it could be a civilian helmet, dressed up. Here is a British advert from 1887.

I really don't claim to be an expert on anything. I have just had a long fascination with sun/pith helmets. That said, I can comment on a few things. First, I've never seen anything like this helmet before, but there is a first time for everything. Tropical helmets were produced by small...

    UNITED STATES IMPORT EXPORT DEVELOPMENTS

I bought a book from the UK, shipping costs were higher than expected and then I was notified I had to pay the tariff. It was $6 for the tariff and $11 for the fees! A $50 book will end up costing me $150 by the time I receive it.

    Replica Lewis Gun

It was a company in the UK. But I don't think they make them anymore. https://www.relics.org.uk/lewis-gun-infantry-pattern-de-luxe

    Austrian Sun Helmet?

The shape, construction, and other features are consistent with helmets from the era. It does look to be made out of sola pith rather than cork or straw. The use of sola pith rather than cork/straw would lead me to conclude that it was probably not made in Austria. Chris Mills, who wrote The...

I don't play computer games as much these days, but I do plan to check this out. WWI: Gallipoli https://www.ign.com/articles/ww1-gallipoli-announced-as-next-game-in-realistic-world-war-1-multiplayer-fps-series

    Palestine Theater M1896 Tropenhelm

Thanks for sharing. I never saw the Bortfeldt helmets in the Bannerman catalog. That makes me think that many that survived were sold to "proto-helmet collectors" before WWI. That could explain why they are in North America!

    Palestine Theater M1896 Tropenhelm

I have serious reason to believe some of the helmets were copied/based on helmets in my collection. I have many of these helmets, and the French helmet even has the hooks on the anchor bent like the example on my helmet!

    Palestine Theater M1896 Tropenhelm

In my opinion, this is a myth made up by dealers a decade ago to justify the fakes. Think about the global politics, German officers weren't going to buy French helmets. And where would they buy them? Germany was exporting arms and equipment, so I can't imagine it would have been acceptable. I...

    Palestine Theater M1896 Tropenhelm

The M1887 was white, while the M1889 was khaki. I've seen both covered with pipe clay, blanco, etc. I can't tell you how many American helmets have been mocked up as Imperial German. These high-end dealers should know better.

    Palestine Theater M1896 Tropenhelm

This helmet sold at auction. It is an American M1887 helmet. I'll have more to write later, but need to get back to work.

    Brow Plate Helmet

High quality fakes of these have been circulating for a few years now. I can't say if this is good or bad, but just know that the fakes are being made.

    Palestine Theater M1896 Tropenhelm

Busy day, but I'll have some time later to take some photos. I honestly can't tell one SS decal from another and don't understand how some guys can, but when it comes to the shapes of sun helmets it is something I can just spot.

    Palestine Theater M1896 Tropenhelm

Hi, Ron-- I didn't know if I should say something, but I felt compelled to offer my two cents. I am not an expert on anything, but I have collected and researched tropical helmets for more than 25 years. My feeling is that this is a French Model 1878 helmet with a cockade added and fake stamps...
