Why Do I Collect this Stuff ?

It's very interesting and enlightening to read how we have started, and keep, collecting. I started out collecting all things military as a child, which became a bit more focused over the years, before I discovered that my grandmother's brothers had all been in the German army during WW I...

    How to restore this one...

I recommend not to apply anything to the leather, either inside or out. It might give a short-term improvement, but in the long run it severely damages the leather and makes it rock-hard. The chinstrap seems to have been treated with something in the past, and has warped (and I guess hardened?)...

relics from the battle of Anloy 14 august 1914

Very nice Michiel, Thank you for showing. The belt buckle looks like the pre-1895 model, could you please show the back? Regards, Lars

    1843 Sixth Kurassier Helmets

Thanks Clovis, My point is that when the Prussians specify "Tombak" it doesn't have to be pinkish / reddish, it can also mean the golden colour range. Regards, Lars

    1843 Sixth Kurassier Helmets

Very nice to have such a detailed history of a collectible, well done Tony. The explanation of the tombac however is incorrect in my opinion. In the English language tombac typically refers to a reddish copper-coloured alloy, whereas in the German language it typically refers to a...

    Pickelhaube

Hi David, Total fake, easiest to recognise are the spike that looks wrong, and the shape and construction of the shell and the liner. If you look at some of the other "other ranks" helmets presented on the forum you will quickly see the difference. The chinstrap, Wappen and cockades also look...

Prussian Jager Officer's Shako to Parade

Hi Chuck, You presented your Tschako and asked for opinions, and a considerable number of members has responded. Those with a "post war" opinion have taken the time to show what their opninion is based on, and even though you are in no way obliged to agree with those opinions, I find your...

Prussian Jager Officer's Shako to Parade

If he married in 1921 he can't have worn a helmet most likely made in or after 1922 :) But there might be a photo from one of the reunions....

Prussian Jager Officer's Shako to Parade

"The company was called until 16.2.1922: C. Pose Export AG, afterwards: C. Pose AG" For me the easiest and most logical explanation why a helmet would have a 1922 (or later) manufacturer's mark is because it was made 1922 (or later). Regards, Lars

14th Mecklenburg Jäger Battalion Shoulder board

Hi, Nice shoulder strap, I'm just surprised the back is blue, according to the Bekleidungsordnung 1896 and 1903 it should be the same green as the uniform. Maybe something special for JB 14. Regards, Lars

    Officer pickelhaube 92Rgt Brunswick

This is outside my area of expertise. According to Turinetti, IR 92 used the running horse until 1912. It doesn't sound unlikely that by 1914 not all the helmets reserved for Reserve and Landwehr units would have been updated to the new design, and Reserve and Landwehr would not have had the...

    Officer pickelhaube 92Rgt Brunswick

Hi Gary, If the markings are original (which I doubt) the "R.I.R. 74" would indicate Reserve Infanterie Regiment 74, IIIrd Bataillon, raised in 1914 by I.R. 74. Regards, Lars

    Officer pickelhaube 92Rgt Brunswick

Hi Gary, According to your documentation the marking should be L.I.R. 74 (Landwehr Infanterie Regiment 74), not R.I.R. 74 (Reserve Infanterie Regiment 74). Regards, Lars

    Officer pickelhaube 92Rgt Brunswick

Hi Gary, Thank you for showing. The markings do not look original to me, all the same size and font, not what I have seen on my own helmets. I'm sorry that not all responses / opinions are what you would like to hear, but it's up to you to decide whether your item is original or not based on...

IR8 Annoying when something that should be cheap isn’t

Has become quite common on the German Ebay as well, normal photos of normal units priced at 50 euros, around 75 euro with postage and tax. Luckily no photos that I felt I must have :) Regards, Lars
