I looked again closely to the pictures, you are right in your observation: not pierced wappen but gold paint, that is really disappointing, thus a no go...

No double holes behind the wappen?? ( I can’t see if you made a photo of the interior behind the wappen) , otherwise looks good to me ( the wappen seems correct for an officer with the perched crown and laurel leaves)

Apart from army museums, if you are touring through Europe coming from the states visiting Paris is very much recommended as it is really close to Belgium by speed train or car

But as you already said: army museum in Brussel ( army musea in Paris and Vienna are also very worthwhile visiting, so if you are touring Europe, by train Brussel Paris is less than two hours

The musea in the region of ieper , peronne, arras, and verdun are fantastic I very much like the musea in novion porcien ( Ardennes) and meaux (north of Paris)

I visited the museum 5 years ago, the First World War section is fantastic
