Does his field badge appear to be white cord?
He seems to have the officer sword knot, his Rabatte has white cord with a black top edge, and the helmet plate looks like a normal "small" plate for enlisted men. The mortarboard neck also seems thick like an issued helmet.

He appears to be a Fähnrich, hence the officers' sword knot. The Feldzeichen may well be a private purchase "ribbed" version.

That would be correct for Fähnrich, they wore NCO lace and (I believe?) the Sgt 30mm button on the collar, possibly back too far on the collar to be seen. At any rate, the Unteroffizier bush and Fangschnur would be correct for this rank and him being a Fähnrich.

Tony,

no collar button for the Fähnrich but entitled to the officers' Portepee and the same cockades as the Feldwebel/Vizefeldwebel and the officers' Feldzeichen if appropriate. Maybe this is a bullion silver pattern Feldzeichen in the photo.

Glenn
