I have had this framed foto for several years and picked it up at a local antique mall. I paid $35 and I grabbed it as soon as I saw it. Obviously, it is very unusual to have one so well named. I am hoping Glenn or some other member can provide some extra information on this individual. Thank you in advance.

It is hard to see in this post but there is a Garde star on the hilt of Rudolf's sword which provides additional information.

Brian,

lovely photo of Leutnant d.R. Rudolf v. Tiedemann of Kaiser Alexander Garde-Grenadier-Regiment Nr. 1. KIA 29 August 1916 at Maurepas.

Wow, thanks Glenn, once again you have demonstrated your remarkable skills at tracking down these names. Thank you! A couple of questions I do not speak/read German but from what I can make out......he joined up August 10th as a war volunteer in the Kaiser Alexander Garde Grenadier Regt #1, Dec 24 1914 promoted to Unterofficer, May 2 1915 Vicefeldweble, May 14 1915 Leutnant. A very quick rise up in the ranks on joining up at age 31! I am thinking his family had a a history with this Regt? His father was Karl Albert v Tiedemann. He served initially on the western Front in France (various Fr locations listed) October 1914-March 1915, then the Eastern Front Lemberg July 9/15? I can't translate the rest except he was wounded. I understand also that Maurepas is a location which is part of the Somme Battles?

Brian,

Always looking to make a deal – my next-door neighbor, close friend and drinking buddy is named Merle Tiedemann. I would love to buy this for him as a gift. So put your thinking hat on and let me know if you are willing to sell it and for what price. You made a pretty good deal out of the translation. Unfortunately, the guy died in 1916.

Brian,

no other v. Tiedemann served with GGR 1. I assume "G.G." stands for Gewehr-Geschoß or (gun shot wound) to his lower right arm at Igbica. His younger brother was the later Wehrmacht Generalleutnant Karl v. Tiedemann.

Glenn

Thanks Glenn. I guess Haus Labehn or house Labehn describes the location of the family estate? Wikipedia tells me there are 2 places of that name in Pomerania, now Poland. Is there any way of finding out what medals he would have been awarded besides the EK2 for being KIA? Sorry Joe, not for sale at this time. His brother Carl served in Grenadier-Regiment „König Friedrich Wilhelm IV.“ (1. Pommersches) Nr.2 and a couple of other Regts during WW1. He survived WW2 and died in 1979.
