another very interesting photograph. It is not quite the 1st squadron of the 3rd Bavarian Train Battalion (Abteilung) but the I. Ersatz-Abteilung of the 3. Train-Abteilung. An almost clumsy unit designation which translates as the 1st replacement detachment (battalion) of the 3rd Train detachment (battalion). Formed on mobilisation at Fürth, it provided the replacement manpower for the hundreds of train, supply, bakery, provisions, horse depot units etc. within the auspices of the III army corps area. Being a battalion sized unit, it was established for a trumpet corps as opposed to a couple of trumpeters.
