Allenby Liberates Jerusalem

It was 100 years ago today that British General Edmund Allenby, Commander-in-Chief of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF), marched into the Holy City of Jerusalem not as a conqueror but as a liberator! Two days after the official surrender by the Turks and exactly six weeks after the fall of Beersheba, Allenby (commander of the EEF) made his formal entry into Jerusalem on foot through the Jaffa gate instead of by horse or vehicles to show his great respect for the holy place.

I walked through the Jaffa gate in 2009 and it was one of the highpoints of my life to walk in the footsteps of the man who liberated the Holy City. I also saw the bullet holes in the walls when the city was liberated in the Six Day War in 1967.
