American Pickelhaube

Joe knows a LOT more about these than I do, but now is a great time for me to learn. I picked this up on Friday at the MAX Show. The price was absolutely right and I'm blown away to even have this helmet. It came with the original storage tin too.

Any information on this helmet would be appreciated. I know these were used post Civil War by some militia units around the country and likely was a private purchase item.

Great find and in wonderful shape. I know that National Guard units in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Connecticut wore "German" spike helmets ( and not the US pattern) there maybe others. I don't believe anyone has ever put together a listing of units. Beside the wearing pickelhaube there was a unit in California that wore the complete uniform for the Leib-Husaren Regt. Nr.1 purchased from Germany.

A tremendous piece of American History Peter ! I love the wappen and cocarde.....red white and blue. At the same time, an example of the influence of German immigration to the US during the 1890’s and early 1900’s
