Austro-Hungarian Uniform

Charles:

It's a Lt. General (Feldmarschalleutnant) vs. colonel based on the number of bars in the zig-zag embroidery on the tabs. Very nice!!

Dave

Hi Charles,

as Dave points out, the number of the bars in the zig-zag embroidery is indicative of General Officer rank. It is a distinction even on period charts of the insignia which is often not correctly illustrated.

See below the illistrations of a Generaloberst patch and then that of a Major. The General officers' pattern has three bars between the "knotted" bars whereas the Field officers' pattern just the two. Additionally the General officers' patch was longer with the red underlay extending to the rear of the patch by a further 2.6cm.

Regards
Glenn

Thanks for your help. I see what you mean by the number of bars. Those little details...

I added what medals that I have that have Austrian fold ribbons. The tunic has loops for 7 but I only have 6. Also, I have no idea what goes on the right breast.
