According to the seller it is a Prussian helmet , sooo … who am I to disagree :D

Ed, I bought this one in the early days of ebay. It had been advertised as a "Prussian officer helmet"...

Lucky you ,and great find =D>
Yeah some people use “Prussian” for everything that is imperial.

Just a piece of trivia– I have found that most Belgians in their original accounts called any kind of cavalry –Ulan. I do have one account where a dragoon is called a death's head hussar.

Well I tried, got outbid at last second. Should of bid more, but trying to save for SOS and some big auction coming up.

Pretty rare helmet in my book, but again I was outbid. I think the price it went for was more then fair. Life goes on.

US $1,540.15 :-?

Does not seem outrageous to me... slightly misshapen but I do not see other major issues. And indeed outstandingly rare.
Bruno

It's a lot of change for a century-old hunk of cowhide and some bits of metal--according to the perspective of the lady of the house here--but the poor woman's perspective is skewed,of course.

In a totally different area, I wonder what she would think such a piece of canvas with a few parallel stripes of paint is worth:

Being an artist, I sold one of those recently for $1.4 million. But then that was to a little old lady in Chicago.
Just like helmets, it's not what it's made from, but what it IS. An idea, a concept, something new, aesthetic value, artist or manufacturer, its history as well. None of this stuff has any intrinsic value, it's the values that we, as a society, collectors, investors, etc., place on it. (Personally, I'm not overly fond of minimalism or abstract expressionism, but that's just me. I allow my students to think that I'm very objective, but quite frankly, I'm pretty subjective in my tastes...)

I appreciate your comments Ron. The one I posted went for $ 87 million (Mark Rothko)

Well, Mark, yeah, he's always been like that.

This is a total aside from this thread, but I was on a field trip at the Art Institute of Chicago Museum with my students when one asked me why a certain painting was even in there. I spent about five minutes explaining its history and concept, about art changing so much with the advent of photography, composition and color choice, etc.. As I did this, a couple of people joined in to listen.
At the end, the student said, "So you like this painting."
"No," I replied, "I think it stinks, but I know why it's valued by others and why it's here."

I think it's that way with most things, right? I've seen a lot of Rothkos, I wonder if my wife would like it better than my helmets... I think maybe not! :) Calder... now I think his work would win.

:D Ron

Ron, for the price of the Rothko painting you could probably buy all imperial headgear that still exists in the world, and still have some cash left for a couple of Calder sculptures.
Funny how Mecklemburg artillery brought us to modern art...

I believe that whoever bought the Meck got a great deal. I paid $1800 for a round base Hessen M15 OR helme which certainly, is not as rare as this ebay helme. Regarding abstract art...I have limited to no knowledge. What I do like, is the works of that guy..... "Arthur Decco" or Art Decco as many people called him, I really like a lot of his stuff! Man, that dude was into everything, jewellery, sculpture, fashion, architecture everything! He was like the Tommy Hillfiger of his day! :D
