Hi guy's what do you all think off this Bavarian Raupenhelm?

I like it, but have no knowledge of them at all..
All tips are welcome.

Shell and comb look ok, would like better pics of the liner and underneath liner inside.

The only thing I do not like is the chinstrap, correct type, and leather looks ok, but brass end pieces where they attach to helmet do not have very good detail, all of mine are very detailed.

Better pics would help, price is about right if good.

James

Thanks James, those endpieces got me worried also..
I saw more Raupenhelme with much more detailed ones on them.
I will ask the seller for more detailed pictures of the inside, and under the liner.
If I get them, I will post them here.

Thanks for your fast reply!

Well, these are the pictures I recieved this evening, what do you think?
Should I go on with it or not?

The seller told me he had 2 of them, so this one could go, and that his camera wasn't so good.
This was all he could do.

I think it is a good price, not great but the going rate right now. If you get it and need a replacement Original chinstrap with the lion mountings, I think I have an extra set. Will have to look in parts box.

James

Thanks James!
But should it have a Bavarian kokarde on the left side?
The seller did only place photo's of the right side..
I will try to buy it for less off course, it has been for sale for some time now.
To me the helmet looks legit, but I am no expert on these early helmets.

Yes, for sure there should be a Bavarian kokarden above the lionhead on the side he is not showing. It will be attached to the helmet itself, various designs on the Kokarden are good.

No kokarden, I would not buy unless you can get a great deal.

James

I don't like it Coert. I would need to do some serious research before I jumped on this one.
I don't like the lion heads --- they look like the lion on the Wizard of Oz.
I especially don't like the Wappen. I have never seen a crown configured like that on a Ludwig Raupenhelm.
The studs holding on the visor trim look flattened and too large in diameter for an 1868 Raupenhelm.
I agree with James that the end fittings on the chinstrap are shoddy. They look like they have been cut out with a pair of tin snips.
There are no vents on the shell. I have seen this before (my M45 has no vents), but it is uncommon on an 1868.
The liner also looks questionable IMO.

I am no expert, and James has several more of these than I do, but I have a lot of questions on this one.
Please compare to mine:

An earlier version, where the lion has ears, can be seen here:

I would sure try to get other's opinions before I bought this. I may be completely wrong, but I wouldn't touch it.

John :(

John it totally correct on the wappen, the L looks ok, but the Crown is for sure wrong. Nice catch John, I missed that.

So with bad chinstrap, this bad crown and no pics of the side with the kokarden if there is one, I would pass as well.

There are good ones out there, keep looking one will come your way.

James

Thanks for all the info and knowledge about these helmets gentlemen!

John, your example sure looks different than the one I saw for sale. It is beautiful.
I have decided to let this one pass, too many red flags on it.

The both of you saved me from getting burned, it is great to be part of such a helpful and knowledgable forum!

Coert, I think you made the right choice.
There are better, and more original, pieces out there.
Happy Easter!

Stay healthy,
John :)
