I thought the dome pad was interesting, as well as the early officer liner. I've seen the pads in some helmets from time to time (usually Kuerassier), but it's probably nice not to have screws sticking into the top of your skull if you wear the helmet low on your head...

I have a similar helmet from Rheinland Westfalia (different crest on the eagle) and it's post WWI sans crown and other royal trappings. Mine is also a Koffer helmet (the spike unscrews at the base; re: Joe's catalog book), which this one may also be.
