Is there a good book (in English sadly) that covers the different garde units in ww1?

I don't think so. Maybe Glenn knows of one. There were a great deal of guard units -- there might be a compendium of the guard Corps in German. Nothing comes to mind though .

nothing in English at all

There is a two volume German work published after the war titled "Das Ehrenbuch der Garde. Die preußische Garde im Weltkriege 1914-1919."
