Looking for a broken or (badly) damaged neusilber Wurttemburg wappen to salvage. Mine has the Lion missing his crown and I would like to repair him. The remnant of the crown base is 8mm wide but anything near to that from your trash box would be greatly appreciated (wouldn't want to disfigure a good one.) Thanks for looking, Steve

That’s a new one for me….usually it’s the antlers which are missing. Unfortunately, I can not help out.

"Usually it's the antlers.."
Agreed Brian, but in this case I suspect maybe a soldier with "issues" returning home with his souvenir helmet was making some sort of point. Same as one of my IR74's with the Waterloo banner ripped off.

Still looking,... or has anyone seen a damaged wappen for sale that I could follow up on ?

Dear Steve, I noted that occasionally there are imperial german wappen from which the crowns have been removed. I have some example in my collection.
I think the explanation lies in the political climate of the very early post-war period. From 1918 to 1920 and beyond, a real socialist revolution was underway in Germany which sought a break with the monarchy and its symbols.
I would like to help you, but the silver wurttemberg wappen is not so common to find.

Hi Zeb, I know exactly what you mean: one way of registering disapproval and blame on what people saw as a failed leadership. I have seen crowns removed from British regimental badges too - probably for the same reasons.
Thanks, Steve.

I have in collection a J.B 7. tshako. The eagle come without the crown. Who have cutted out the imperial insignia? I don't know and never we could resolve the mistery. I would like to replace the eagle, but I'm not sure to do it. The tshako without eagle is anyway a testimoniance of a particular historic situation. Am I doing well? I don't know. In the doubt I leave everything as i found.

I think you are doing the right thing Zeb : every helmet tells a story and deliberate damage is part of that story. Just because we own that helmet now doesn't mean we have right to change it. This crown was very neatly and deliberately cut off, so I will leave it as it is - just like my Hanoverian with the ripped off Waterloo bandeau which, coincidentally, I am minimally restoring right now! Thanks for reminding me to think about it this way.(y)
