The skull seems to be the OR pattern. The field badge and cords seem very well preserved...or maybe new.

In addition to JR92's observations, the busby body looks to be made of seal skin. Officer versions should be bearskin. The toggle is also not officer style.

I agree with both R1 and JR92. EM busbies in HR 17 were often made of bearskin, but officer's were certainly never covered with seal fur! In the best case, this is an EM (or NCO) busby wrongly adorned with officer type Fangschnurr and Feldzeichen (chinscales are also of the EM type; officer chinscales in HR17 were particular). In this case it still remains an interesting item. We would need to see pictures of the inside to know.

Not that I am interested in buying this, I am not. But out of curiousity I asked twice now for pictures of the inside, been 4 days with no response....

I was more lucky and immediately received pictures of the inside on request... not very convincing. For sure not a genuine EM busby, but not an officer's either. I'll be happy to forward pictures of mine if you wish.

Thanks for the offer, no need as I have no interest in this Busby!

A lot of times I ask for extra photo's of items to make sure the seller really has the item...

A lot of money bid on somthing that is just not right?

I have never heard of bear skin being used on any OR's busby...just seal. Any ORs that I have handled or seen have always been seal. As to officer, J. L. Lacarde states that only Otter and later Oposum hides were used. My Leib Hussaren No.1 officer busby is made from Oposum. Any bear skin examples out there?? Brian

Quick overview HERE. have a look at the paragraph on HR17. An HR17 Pelzmütze is on my top 3 of items that I have been looking for. In this case, 3 decades. I am not bidding on this one...

Brian: In addition to the information on Tony's exellent web site, The German Cavalry from 1871 to 1914, Uniforms and Equipment by Ulrich Herr and Jens Nguyen has very good information on and superb photos of an HR17 officers busby including the unique plume holder.

While this reference is pricey, it is definitely worth the cost for anyone interested in cavalry helmets.

Brian, all the OR HR17 busbies I have held in my hands (including mine...) were covered with bear skin, although these were also produced in seal skin (see the superb example pictured in Larcade's, vol.II). Just to confirm what Tony writes in his spectacular thread on Husaren.

This guy must have deep pockets and a very understanding better half.
That's a lot of dough for a smashed fur hat.
:-?
