This article aims to hightlight a spike helmet through the history events it has lived. The reservist MAX WILDE from the 9/FB/9 was wounded during the figths of VARREDES, a battle in the first battle of the marne river in september 1914.
September 1914 is a crucial period in the WW1 and in the french history. After one month of retreat, the french army face the ennemy and attack.
because of the war on two fronts, german army can't conduct the schlieffen plan as scheduled in 1905.
MOLTKE had to remove troops of the battle corps to sent them to the east. The planned scythe blow is less wide and avoid PARIS.
Inebriated by the victory and hoping defeated the 5th french army, VON KLUCK chief of the the 1st german army overlook the 6 french army and give to its 4th reserve army corps to facing to PARIS on its right.
On the 5th september, the 7th and the 22 german reserve div of 4th reserve army corps are defeated at MONTHYON by the 55th and 56 reserve french division and withdrawn in direction of th ourcq river (northward). Seeing is right threatened VON KLUCK have to call the 2d army corps back.
The GR9 belongs to this corps, 3rd DIV / 5TH BRIG.
The 2d german army corps threatened the flank of the 6th french army.
The little village of VARREDDES is the pivot of the german front and like MONTHYON is a battle in the battle.
The 6th of septembre in the afternoon the 3 german ID (II army corps) is facing the the marocco brigade and the 55th french reserve brigade, the 22d german RD and the 7german RD (IV amy corps) are facing the 56th french RD.
The 5th german brigade have to hold the northern crest of VARREDES and to maintain the liaison with the IV army corps in ETREPILLY.
The 9GR hold the northern crest of VARREDDES behind the 6TH brigade. the fusillier bataillon is on the right side of the rgt.
Like MONTHYON this battle is the theater of numerous pieces of heroism on the both parts.
Everyone remembers the words of VON KLUCK commanding the German troops on the French soldier: that men who had retreated for two weeks, that men lying on the ground and half-dead from fatigue could take up the rifle and attack with the sound of the bugle, is something with which we Germans had never learned to count with – it’s a possibility that has never been discussed in our war schools.”
GR 9 suffered the following losses :
