Collecting by Remote Control: Bavarian M95 in Neusilber fittings

In 2015, I was looking at photos someone posted of the SOS and there was what appeared to be a very nice issued Bayern (Bavarian) M95 in Neusilber fittings at a table. I have been after one of these for a very long time, as you just never see them. I texted Brian L. to try and find it, and he replied within seconds that he was sitting at that exact table, and it belonged to Jerry Rehr! Seriously, what are the chances? :tard:

Brian called me and described it as appearing to be all original and untouched. Jerry knows me and was happy to give it to Brian to bring back to Canada, and I mailed Jerry the money. No problem. Thank you both very much.

Its a beautiful helmet with a very pleasing patina to the fittings, and what's most important, is that the chinstrap in Neusilber fittings is there and original. I could care less that it broke in the middle and was sewn together at some point. If that helmet was missing the strap I would not have looked twice. Buying a helmet in Neusilber missing the M91 strap thinking one can be found, is what we call a "Fool's errand" which means its impossible. Never going to happen. And the original Bayern stamped M91 Kokarde. So this was a perfect example for me.

One chanse in a life time and defenitly in sutch moments
Won't happen to you twice i guess

Very nice helmet

I remember that Tony; it was amazing that Brian was sitting at the very table.
What a wonderful example, and your photography is absolutely superb!!!

It is a very cool helmet, no doubt and I have never seen another one like it either before 2015 or since. A very rare beast!

It was a lucky strike, as it was on the table, for sale, and it should have sold in a flash.

Fortunately I had a close friend looking out for me, and a respected collecting friend willing to send it to me without cash in hand.

An advanced collecting friend Steve McFarland told me once that the collectibles are only a small part of this hobby, what matters most are the collecting friends you make along the way.

Beautiful Bavarian Tony!
I couldn't help but notice that the chinstrap M91 mounts are the seemingly thicker solid type. Would this helmet have had flat brass scales, if Pioneer, or flat silver scales, if Lieb, for garrison use?

John :bravo: :bravo: :bravo:

Great helmet. Congratulations on such a good find and good luck. If the chin straps are so hard to find, I guess the pair of chin strap buckles I'm look for will be a lost cause.

I did that with Joe's Kurassier helmet photo'd on the SOS table a few years ago. I was very happy to get it too. It's amazing how helpful this community of collectors is. Nice looking helmet by the way! :)

Tony- not to take away from your helmet it is awesome, but here is the reason that one was available from Jerry!!

Tony,
I have a very similar chinstrap reparation on one of my saxon M15. No doubt for me, this kind of seam is period!

I totally agree....an original repair, even back then these things were breaking and had enough value to deserve repair.

A beautiful helmet Tony, congratulations! I was wondering who Jerry sold it to.

I remember when it walked in to the Minnesota Military Show a few years ago on a Saturday morning, and the show manager Bob Johnson bought it. I was sorry that I was out of work at the time and didn't have the money to buy it from him, and later from Jerry after he acquired it from Bob.

Best Regards,

Alan
