What is this?

Later Bavarian artillery with a Prussian plate? Somebody must really need the parts to pay almost $300 for that ratty, bend up, rotten POS.

Just for comparison I paid 80 euro´s for my M95 chinstrap on ebay two years ago :D

The square visor would seem to be a Bavarian feature, but I wondered if the cruciform-based ball was Hessian. It was put on with chinstrap post discs sandwiched behind the rivet prongs. Surely it's an example of put-together-helmet that was done a long, long time ago.

When the Bavarian artillery finally adopted the ball top, wouldn't they have been wearing curved-visored helmets--and in gray trim?

It seems to be a hessian helmet . the studs on the spine, and square front .,. would that not be a dragoon helmet?

According to Helme u. Muetzen der Armee 1871-1945 by 'Deutschland Katalog', the Kugel came in as of 1916 and the Kruezblat was retained (they have a photo of one). I'll look at other books later. To me it looks like the front 'arm' of the base is much shorter than the others, which would not indicate Hessian... so I'll stick with Bavarian Arty. with a Prussian plate. Still a POS no matter where it comes from.

From what I can find, Hessen artillery had rounded visors as well.

Yeah, a photo from the top would have shown that arm, or 'leaf' or what ever, much better.. it's really difficult to tell from those on the auction.

The lack of a rounded visor caught my eye first, but seeing that the ball-base was secured with chinstrap post reinforcing discs, I wondered if somebody ages ago assembled loose items for a bond sale prize.

I agree.
